How much yield can Ganoderma cost per acre? A calculation, not a slogan
Convert published Ganoderma yield-loss evidence into transparent per-acre scenarios without pretending one number applies to every estate.

Short answer
There is no scientifically honest single value for “Ganoderma loss per acre.” Loss changes with palm age, disease incidence and severity, attainable healthy yield, planting conditions, neighbouring infection, management response, and the period being measured.
Two published findings help establish a defensible range:
- An MPOB case study in Johor reported fresh-fruit-bunch reductions from 0.04 to 4.34 tonnes per hectare for plantings aged 10 to 22 years. Dividing by 2.471 converts that to approximately 0.016 to 1.76 tonnes per acre.
- A later Bayesian model estimated that economic loss could reach 68% of attainable yield among infected palms in the observed study conditions.
These numbers answer different questions. Neither is a universal whole-estate loss rate.
Why “per acre” can mislead
An acre is an area, while Ganoderma affects palms unevenly. Two 100-acre estates can face very different exposure if one has isolated confirmed palms and the other has expanding clusters in high-yielding mature blocks.
Before calculating loss, separate four quantities:
- Total estate area — the land under consideration.
- Affected share — the proportion reasonably treated as affected in the scenario.
- Attainable healthy yield — the FFB production expected without the modeled disease loss.
- Yield-loss fraction — the reduction applied only to the affected area or affected palms.
Multiplying a severe infected-palm loss fraction across the full estate would exaggerate exposure. Applying a mild average to a heavily affected block could understate it.
The transparent formula
For an area-based scenario:
Annual FFB loss = hectares × affected share × attainable healthy yield × yield-loss fraction
If the estate is measured in acres, convert first:
hectares = acres × 0.404685642
An optional revenue scenario then multiplies lost tonnes by a dated, explicitly selected FFB price. It should be called revenue exposure, not total economic damage, because it excludes treatment cost, palm mortality, replanting, delayed replacement yield, labour, discount rates, and recovery effects.
Worked example
Consider 100 acres, equivalent to about 40.47 hectares. Assume:
- attainable healthy yield: 20 t FFB/ha/year;
- affected share: 10%; and
- yield reduction within the affected area: 40%.
The calculation is:
40.47 ha × 0.10 × 20 t/ha/year × 0.40 = 32.4 tonnes FFB/year
This is a scenario built from stated assumptions. It is not a claim that every 100-acre estate will lose 32.4 tonnes.
How to use the published range
The Johor study’s 0.04–4.34 t/ha range can serve as a literature reference point when explaining why palm age and disease context matter. The lower and upper observations span more than a hundredfold difference. That spread is exactly why a single marketing statistic would be misleading.
The 68% result should be treated with equal care. It describes modeled loss relative to attainable yield among infected palms under the study design. A whole-estate estimate needs the local share of affected palms and a comparable healthy baseline.
